Sheikh Atef Mahgoub
Sheikh Atef Mahgoub was the Religious Director at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh for 7 years. In this capacity he oversaw all religious and educational programs and activities (including the Youth, Outreach and special Ramadan programs). He also led daily, Friday, Taraweeh and Eid prayers, taught weekly educational classes for youth and adults, provided marriage and funeral services and various forms of guidance for community members, and participated in interfaith and outreach activities. He also published scholarly articles and books while interacting with media for television and radio appearances. He represented the Islamic Center as a guest lecturer at various other organizations and universities, locally and internationally. Prior to that period, Sheikh Atef was a Youth Coordinator and Religious Advisor at Masjid Ar-Rahman in Mansoura, Egypt.
Sheikh Atef was classically trained in the Al-Azhar University School System since he was eight years old, where he received his advanced degree in Islamic studies in 2002. He is also licensed to teach Islamic Studies and to act as a Mufti by Al-Azhar University. He is a Hafiz, trained in different Qira’at (Hafs, Hamza, Naf’a), and has Ijazat in numerous books of Fiqh, Tafseer, Hadith, and Usul Fiqh. He published a book titled ‘Fiqh of Fasting’ in 2014, and is currently working on a book titled ‘Contemporary Issues Facing American Muslims’.
Omar Latif Omar Latif lives near ICOI and has been part of the community since 2011. He and his family have been involved in various ICOI programs. He enjoys hiking with his wife and son.
Amira Abed joined the Board of Directors as head of Marketing and Communications in April 2019. Amira was born and raised in Southern California and has spent most of her life in Orange County. She has been a member of the Irvine community since attending the grand opening of ICOI. She holds a B.A. degree from UCI in Law & Society, and a law degree from the University of Connecticut. Amira currently works for Davis Partners, a commercial property management and development firm based out of Newport Beach, as the head of human resources.
Amira has a passion for volunteer work through OC Unity Now!, and firmly believes that effective da’wah is won through quiet and genuine service of others, leaving the community in a better condition than how one entered it. She hopes that through her service ICOI will be an even more inclusive and welcoming place for all.
Fun Fact: Amira is a committed Lakers fan, no matter what. When she isn’t volunteering, or spending time with her family she is cooking and eating her way through her cookbook collection.
Iffat Qamar is a member of the Board of Directors of ICOI. She moved to Irvine in 2005 and is part of this community for 15 years. She is originally from Pakistan and immigrated to US in 2001. She grew up in Lahore and graduated from University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore. She holds MS from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey, and a Ph.D. from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. She works with California Department of Transportation, District 12, Orange County and currently leads environmental efforts on $2 billion I-405 Improvement Design/Build Project. She is Known as a dedicated professional with strong work ethics. She has lead Caltrans Toastmasters Club for a number of years and is also an active member of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA).
Fun Fact: Iffat loves to learn Allah’s Book and serve His Deen in various capacities. She also loves to travel and spend time with her family.
