2012 Youth Camp Sponsorship

Dear ICOI Community,

The Youth Group at the Islamic Center of Irvine is in preparation for its 6th Annual Youth Camp. We would like to invite you to participate in supporting our youth, ages 14 - 18, to participate in a weekend of spiritual, educational and social growth. This weekend is a special opportunity for our youth to take part in a variety of activities that focus on improving their deen while being surrounded by a diverse group of Muslim teens. The events and activities of the weekend, led by dynamic speakers and community leaders, include lectures and discussions, team-building exercises, and other individual activities that challenge our youth mentally, spiritually and even physically--like our most popular activity - the high ropes course. For the past five years, nearly every participant experienced a spiritual fulfillment that resulted in a stronger sense of identity and a well established connection to their peers.

We are reaching out to local community members to encourage your participation in making this year's camp the best ever. In order to do that, we need to raise $20,000 to cover the costs of the camp, while still maintaining an affordable price for our youth. Indeed, many of our youth require scholarships to attend and it is only with the generous support of our community members that this can be possible. The estimated cost for each youth to attend the camp is $250. We have many options available to you. Please carefully look at the following options and let us know how you can lend your support. Any support will be greatly appreciated. May God bless you for supporting the youth development in our community.

T-shirt advertisement: Your logo will be printed on the back of 200 t-shirts (one given to each participant at the end of camp): $500
Sponsor a youth: $250 per youth
Sponsor the counselors (approximately 30 college and post-college students): $7500
Sponsor the ropes course: $5000
Sponsor the bus trip to the camp (2 buses): $1100 each
We also accept in-kind donations of snacks, food, and supplies.

Eid Ul Fitr 2011 Clarifications

Eidul Fitr on Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Some Clarifications
Doubts have been raised by some about the decision of the Fiqh Council of North America and the European Council of Fatwa and Research about the date of Eidul Fitr this year on August 30, 2011. Following are some clarifications from the Fiqh Council of North America.

The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarram as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah.
The Astronomical New Moon is on August 29, 2011 (Monday) at 3:04 Universal Time (6:04 a.m. Makkah time). On Monday, August 29, sunset at Makkah is 6:40 p.m. local time, while moonset is at 6:44 pm local time.
It is claimed that the new moon will not be visible on August 29 anywhere in the world. This information is not correct.
In United States the birth of Astronomical new moon is on August 28, 2011 (Sunday) at 11:04 p.m. (New York), at 8:04 p.m. (California) and 5:04 p.m. (Hawaii).
On Monday, August 29, the Crescent will set 13 minutes after sunset in San Diego, California and 28 minutes after sunset in Honolulu, Hawaii.
On Monday, August 29 the Crescent should be visible in Hawaii by binoculars and telescope and in South America by naked eye.

The Shawwal Crescent of Monday, August 29 is acceptable according to Shari’ah for those who recognize the Global sighting as it is also acceptable according to the criteria adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America.
Eidul Fitr is on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Eid Mubarak and best wishes for a blessed Eid with peace and harmony among all.

Ramadan Jummah Time Change

During Ramadan (effective 8/5/2011), ICOI will be holding two Jummah prayers each Friday.

New Schedule:

Prayer 1: 12:30pm (khutbah starts), 1:05pm (prayer starts)
Prayer 2: 1:45pm (khutbah starts), 2:15pm (prayer starts)

This time change is being made to accommodate the needs of our growing community. We will also reduce traffic congestion, and impact to neighboring businesses and residents. If successful, ICOI will continue this program beyond Ramadan.

Fiqh Council Announces Ramadan/Shawwal Dates for 2011

The Fiqh Council of North America has released the following announcement about Ramadan & Shawwal 2011.

RAMADAN & SHAWWAL 1432 (2011)
First day of Ramadan will be Monday, August 1, 2011 and
Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, inshaAllah.

"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint." Qur'an 2:183

The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar'i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarram as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah.

On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1432 AH are established as follows:

1st of Ramadan will be on Monday, August 1, 2011
1st of Shawwal will be on Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Ramadan 1432 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on July 30, 2011 (Saturday) at 18:40 Universal Time (9:40 pm Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on July 30 is at 7:01 pm local time, while moonset at Makkah is 6:41pm local time (20 minute before sunset). Therefore the following day Sunday, July 31, 2011 is not the 1st day of Ramadan. First day of Ramadan is Monday, August 1, insha'Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Sunday, July 31, 2011.

Eid ul-Fitr 1432 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on August 29, 2011 (Monday) at 3:04 Universal Time (6:04 am Makkah time). On Monday, August 29, sunset at Makkah is 6:40 p.m. local time, while moonset is at 6:44 pm local time. Therefore, first day of Shawwal, i.e., Eid ul-Fitr is Tuesday, August 30, insha'Allah.

Upgrade ICOI, Upgrade your Sadaqa Jariya (Residual Charity)

ICOI is in the process of upgrading many key features that will enhance the way that your Islamic Center is utilized. Alhamdulillah, ICOI is nearing 7 years old now, and it is time to do some work to keep things in good working order. Gain some Sadaqa Jariya, the charity that keeps on giving by helping your masjid!

Key Upgrades

Technology Upgrade - This upgrade will allow us to not only better present any events, classes, or seminars being held at ICOI to the many who attend them at the Center, but to an audience worldwide over the Internet.

Network Equipment - $800
Computer Systems & software - $4,600
Wall Mounted Projector and Screens for Main Prayer Hall - $8,000
Wall Mounted HD Cameras - $12,000

New ICOI Entrance Construction - This project will help alleviate the foot traffic jam during events at ICOI. It entails making a second entrance to the left of the current ICOI main doors for immediate access to the upstairs prayer hall and classrooms. - $8,000
Maintenance - ICOI is showing some age, it's time to put a fresh coat of paint and other work to keep ICOI looking great!

Interior Paint - $400
Interior Tile Sealing and repair - $600
Replace Broken Chairs - $1,200
Office Renovations - $10,000
