"3. True believers are only those whose hearts tremble when the name of Allah is mentioned, and who, when His Signs are recited to them, have their faith increased thereby, and who put their trust in their Lord 4. Who observe Prayer and spend out of that which We have provided for them. 5. These it is who are true believers. They have grades of rank with their Lord, as well as forgiveness and an honourable provision."

Our discussion today is primarily on Dhikrullah (Rememberance of Allah) and the various modes thereof. There are over 150 references. in the Qur'an to words from the root dh-k-r (to remember, to mention, to invoke). Our focus here is specifically on dhikr (whether qalbi, 'aqli, lisani, 'amali, whether singularly or in congregation) as it pertains to ways in which Allah is remembered (by name or in essence) as the Supreme Being.

The Qur'an refers to ...

  1. Remembrance that emanates from reflecting and pondering over the signs of Allah (Q3:191)
  2. Silent dhikr as in the case of Prophet Zakariyya (Q3:41)
  3. Thankfulness to Allah for His favors (Q20:42)(Q62:10)
  4. Consciousness of the Divine beyond ideological boundaries (Q22:40)
  5. Calling upon Allah in supplication (Q40:65)
  6. Calling upon Allah by Name (Q7:180), glorifying His Name (Q73:8)(Q1:1) and remembrance of Allah's Name linked to salaah (Q87:15)
  7. Salaah as dhikr (Q20:14)
  8. Dhikr as the spiritual essence of the physical salaah (Q29:45)
  9. All pervading remembrance and consciousness of Allah beyond ritual prayer (Q4:130) and beyond rites of pilgrimage (Q2:200).
  10. Dhikr as a reciprocal relationship between Creator and creation (Q2:152)

God's messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"People will not sit remembering God without the angels surrounding them, mercy covering them, peace descending on them"
(Muslim)
